One Room Schoolhouse

The twins have been studying about the Pioneer Days at school and to make them more really they spent the day last Friday at a one room schoolhouse.

They made ink from walnuts.
They used feathers for pens.
They wrote on chalkboards.
They dressed up like Pioneer kids.

What a fun day they had....and just think they actually made it a whole day without playground toys, computers, and any other modern day things...except for the toilet. :)

Team Mrs. Bird's Friends on the Road

The maps were studied,
The teams were formed,
The directions are planned out,
The t-shirts were designed with pink and teal,
The team spents hours decorating the truck
and the day had finally come...
It was Road Rally day!!!!

and what a fun day it was.  The fourth graders at DCS did a unit in social studies about Kent County...it's roads, natural landmarks, and more.  The boys had to map out a route through out the county and we(the parents) had to follow their directions for the different places.  At each place the boys and I got out and took a picture of the landmark.  Of course we had to make a couple of unplanned detours to the donut shop and to Speedway for a slushie.

Brendan, Andrew and Austin by the truck before hitting the road.

The truck was even plastered with pictures of Mrs. Bird's Friends AKA the boys' moms plus Mrs. Bird
Andrew and Brendan going over the map in the truck.
Stopping along the way to observe a "Natural Beauty Road"
Donuts...can't go on a road trip without some snacks!!!

at one of the stops the boys had to take a video.  They orginally wanted to video someone else hitting a golf ball, but no one was playing golf that day, so the boys asked the golf pro for a putter and a ball and headed out to the putting green to capture a video of each other hitting the ball.

 another detoured pitstop...SPeedway for slushies.

after a long hot trip we stopped once again for some more fuel for the body...ice cream at Houseman's  Ice Cream in Bryon Center.

What a day is was!!!!
 Full of fun and food!!!!
Can't wait for the next road rally in a couple years.

Poetry Reading

This past Thursday my 2nd graders AKA the twins had a poetry read at school.  They both did a great job memorizing and saying their poems.

Lucas was the first kids of the whole grade to perform.
His poem was "Nine Mice"
Nine Mice on tiny tricycles
went riding on the ice,
they rode in spite of warning signs,
they rode despite advice

The signs were right, the ice was thin,
in half a trice, the mice fell in,
and from their chin down to their toes
those mice entirely froze.

Nine mindless mice, who paid the price,
are thawing slowly by the ice
still sitting on their tricycles
…nine white and shiny micicles

Austin had to wait a bit longer to say his poem.  He was about in the middle of the program.  He also did a great job.
His poem was "Five Little Firefighters"

Five little firefighters all in a row,
One, two, three, four, five they go!
Hop on the engine with a shout,
Quicker than a wink, the fire is out

Teacher Appreciation Week

This past week was Teacher Appreciation Week at our school.  I had so much fun coming up with small tokens of our appreciation each day with the help of pinterest.    Here's a few of the things I did.
"Sparking my creative juices" with vitamin water or gatorade

"I'm a smart cookie!!!"  with a bunch of homemade cookies.  I'm so bummed the picture sucks...sorry
"Star of the school" with a bag of starbucks
"You were MINT to teach" with a packet of gum...or you could do some mints or a tin of altoids.  I actually quickly whipped with one up cause I couldn't find a printable.
Reuseable Drink Tumblers with the Teacher's names on the them.

Even with all these gifts I still haven't express of much the boys teachers mean to me and Mike.  They are the best teachers in the world!!!!

Thanks again for all that you do each and every day!!!!
